You have done so much in so many different ways --getting so many Afghan families out, doing case management, helping them transition once here, jobs, resumes and of course writing about it all to draw attention to the cause. But there comes a time for veterans and their families that they must set some healthy limits so they can live. You are right to point out that Americans can choose to help also and many will continue in some limited way and others will not , many because they are just trying to survive and don't have the bandwidth. You and a handful of others have been a light and others must take up the fight now as well.
Following your journey has been a blessing and helped educate me; there is just so much I never knew about military/family life, the depth of sacrifices even after returning.
Thank you for helping to keep me centered *somewhat*. I still keep a copy of your long ago suggested reading list with your commentary of who the person is/writes for/etc.) I call it my bible of sorts. (Still hoping you will update it.) I am not sure why many I know are afraid to read other opinions. As long as you know the bias, why not hear the path others have taken. Great recommendation to sign up for The Bullwark which led me to other substack writers.
Last week, I woke up about 2:00 a.m. in a cold sweat thinking about the possibility of your/the Afghan families being deported. Because of you, I know their stories and because of you, Joe and I continue to donate for their cause. (We also for years have worked and donated to help with *legal* immigration. (I guess holding a green card, visa, certainly the TPS doesn't protect one anymore?) The only thing I CAN do is call my Congressman..especially Sen. Roger Wicker.
Seeing people-family/friends- not understand how the path for these Afghan families should be honored is distressing. For the people chanting "Send them ALL back!", I suppose now these families are put in that box. Heartbreaking.
So I thank you for sharing and giving me some clarity on multiple issues.
Time for you to rest, spend time with your precious princess, keep pursuing your personal dreams, and just let yourself enjoy life.
You have done more than your part for all of us..as has your mother.
I am grateful for the gift of your wisdom and words and better for having *known you*.
Following, reading you, and "hearing" your stories is my *Thank you for your service.*
God bless..MP
