If you find America, please call. Because I'm the proud father of a disabled vet (Army Field Artillery) and an active duty Marine aviator, and a person who has proudly spent my entire 35 professional working years in service of the Rule of Law, and I don't really know anymore why the fuck my boys did it, or why I do it. Some of finest young people I know--true servant leaders--I've met through my sons, and I've taken great pride in my personal (if unarmed) defense of the Constitution, but I'm increasingly uncertain that the Republic comes anywhere near to earning their sacrifice.
Whatever you find, God speed you. You are writing for the right reason: to learn and to reveal.
If I remember correctly, your first piece written for The Bulwark was a knockout, which is when I first heard of you. I could feel your ups and downs in your writing and once on a podcast with Kate.
Good luck on your memoir and travels across America.
I'm going to write about my writing tomorrow. There's no purpose to it. I write to heal. It's therapeutic. I write to tell war stories because war can only be understood by those who haven't experienced it through stories. These stories are not PG-13. They're supposed to unsettle you bc war is inherently horrible, even if it's tragically necessary.
Will miss your rough 'n tough insights. I'm also writing a memoir but only about the three years I spent writing support letters for two pro-democracy Afghans after I saw a post on Linkedin that they were having to move nightly to avoid Taliban revenge. Tough to balance my own and others' perspectives, story and facts with reasons to keep turning pages... but your 20 years and many more outstanding Afghans is a bigger challenge. You, however are a gifted channeller of experience.
Cannot give you enough accolades. Outstanding piece. Thank you,Will. My commitment to follow you has never wavered for over 15 years: My way of saying "Thank you for your service." (and your amazing mother too) You *speak* to me often and also educate me. I don't want to ever *lose your voice*. It has guided me and kept my mind open. Enjoy your journey. Sending positive thoughts as you travel.❤️🙏🏼😂
I look forward to reading your book. And if you travels across the country take you to Cincinnati, I hope we can connect in real life, along with the veterans in my own circle.
One of your best.

G*d bless you.
As usual, you are provocative and honest. I appreciate you.
