Some Underrated War Movies for Your Consideration
Master and Commander: I’m glad the Navy recruiter advised me to move on to the Air Force because I couldn’t hack it on a
boatship. Nope. Hell nah!
Four Feathers - This little gem from 2002 explains honor, courage, and cowardice better than any movie I’ve ever seen. It’s simply a remarkable film.
Hamburger Hill - This little gold oldie from the past is a must-watch. It explores race relations, fragging, and dying for a hill that some overly educated General Officer thought was a good idea. Fun fact: I actually toured Hamburger Hill during my trip to Vietnam a few years ago.
Enemy at the Gates - I wish every American would watch this movie, as it would genuinely educate our populace about Mother Russia’s capacity to endure hardships that I’m not sure many Americans could match.
Gallipoli - Mel Gibson may have controversial opinions (dislikes Jews), yet he is undeniably a skilled actor. This classic film showcases a critical battle fought by Australian soldiers in World War I.

Remembering Colonel Abdul Karim Rahimi
On this Memorial Day, we pause to remember the brave souls who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom. Today, I write to honor one such man whose courage, leadership, and service embody the spirit of this solemn day—Colonel Abdul Karim Rahimi, a pilot, warrior, and patriot of Afgh…
Why I No Longer Recommend Military Service
A few months ago, I was standing in an overly-priced Sushi restaurant turned nightclub with a handful of young men. These were the type of young men the Department of Defense needed: smart, driven, ambitious,…

On Vacation
Over the last seven months or so, I’ve been dealing with a lot. I’ve had former vets accuse me of abandoning my daughter and have received death threats thrown at me with ease. Now that the death threats are finally, mercifully, coming to somewhat of a conclusion, I’m going to do what I’ve needed to do since my divorce: focus on myself. Accordingly, I’m taking a deep digital detox. It’s time for me to unplug and focus on healing from years of conflict. I’m fine. I’m not going to throw myself off the tallest building in Kazakhstan. However, I am going to take a knee and acknowledge some past traumas. This is what this whole website is really about: providing space for those affected by the GWOT to tell their stories and start to heal, whether they’re Afghans, Americans, or Iraqis.
That also means I have to practice what I preach. Now that we have our first media intern in the saddle, we should be able to make a rather seamless transition. We will also be publishing weekly episodes from Shoulder to Shoulder and one from Voices of the Resistance. Once I reappear, I will be focusing on writing a long-form article about the fall of Afghanistan. Thus, I will only appear in written form and on podcasts and will not be active on social media for the foreseeable future.
This whole thing (points wildly) isn’t about me. I hate the attention. I also don’t want to be the face of the Afghanistan movement anymore. I’m happy to write and speak about it during important anniversaries, but life is too short to focus solely on the past. It’s also time to focus on what we’re trying to accomplish here with Selber Security Solution (S3), which we hope will provide Afghans with good-paying jobs. More to follow on that in a short time.
TL;DR: If you want to get a hold of me, you’re going to fail. We have a great team of people working here, AAVA, and S3 who can help anyone who has questions about billing, etc. Please give us grace.
Until Next Time
Even more astonishing or frightening, the Russians lost twice as many people in the defense of Leningrad(St Petersburg) than the US lost onWW II. The siege ran for 1941-1943(not a full three years). That is an impressive demonstration of dedication to their city and nation. Could we match it, I don’t know. Certainly not the politicians.
Big fan of Enemy at the Gates and you're 100% right.
